OXID eShop 6.0 beta release – Now available for download and testing

OXID eShop 6.0 (CE, PE, EE) beta information

The final release of OXID eShop 6.0 is scheduled for Q2 of 2017. As OXID eShop 6.0 provides a larger set of changes compared to previous versions, we now start our beta testing period rather early. Like that, we have enough time for a lively feedback process, for extensions to be adapted and to eliminate possible bugs. As for every beta, we do not recommend its use in productive mode.

The beta is shipped with the OXID eShop core, the Composer plugin and the Flow theme front end. The Azure Theme is also included for backward compatibility. The beta is not shipped with any other extensions such as payment providers for example. The OXID eShop 6.0 beta should basically be used to try out the new installation routine, to check out the changes and to adapt modules and extension to be compatible with the new code base.

OXID eShop 6.0 identity

The version 6 is an evolution based on the 5.3. While 5.3 delivered some feature highlights like the Flow theme or the Visual CMS, the focus of 6.0 is set on major work under the hood – refactoring. Every larger framework from time to time needs some care where things are cleaned up, fixed, renewed or replaced to gain speed and to open up perspectives for innovation.

An OXID solution always is a composition of tools from the OXID eco system. Therefore backward compatibility is one of OXID’s highest requirements, which is why refactoring processes are a really tough challenge. We are proud to say that we came up with great solutions to realize backward compatibility besides many architectural changes. The refactoring of larger parts of the application was based on the motto of modernizing the framework and making it more flexible while maintaining its stability.

Improving work with the OXID platform for our partners

One of OXID eShop’s major assets is its customizability. We kept this quality and even improved it by offering the ability to make it easier to include external code and different standards into the system by supporting proper namespaceing, dependency handling by Composer and providing the foundation for additional standardized dependency injection. This enables us to produce OXID eShop compilations instead of rigid releases.

We switched from MyISAM to InnoDB and unified the database structure of all three shop editions (CE, PE, EE). ADOdb lite has been replaced by Doctrine and the 6.0 is fully PHP7 compatible and „UTF-8“ only. All these changes lead to a noticeable performance boost and increased developer’s flexibility.

Walking new paths: OXID eShop 6.0 will be 100 % decoded! We eliminated encoding completely from our code base. We are putting full trust in our partners and improve their daily work by not having to worry about encoded black boxes anymore.

But there is more. For further changes and improvements please check out our developer channel OXIDforge here!
Daily work for an OXID developer becomes easier by using the OXID VM/SDK, that provides an out-of-the-box development environment including OXID testing library. All three OXID eShop editions (CE, PE, EE) can now be found on GitHub including a proper Git contributions process.

Improving our own speed of innovation

Besides cleaning up processes under the hood we also invested in the infrastructure around the product. We completely renewed our Continuous Integration environment and set up a new Continuous Delivery process that guarantee us many benefits.

What else?

We would be glad to receive your feedback and thank you in advance for your contributions to make the 6.0 a sound application. All technical information like system requirements, installation instructions, changelog, documentation can be found on the OXIDforge developer channel. You can use Git pull requests for your feedback. Check out here! And last but not least, you can write an e-mail directly to our community manager [email protected]

Pierluigi Meloni has always been against it, already at school. At that time he raised the question „why someone would do something for a certain reason“. This topic lasted until today. And that is the reason, why as a software architect and requirement engineer he is still focusing on the „what“.  After working in the most different areas he came to e-commerce three years ago, where the „what“ is really a challenge. Today, Pierluigi is Product Manager at OXID eSales. He also loves good humour.

Beta release OXID eShop 4.9 (CE) available for testing

We have just released the beta version of OXID eShop 4.9 and would like to invite all members of the OXID Community to test this release. The final release of version 4.9 will be shipped at the end of September. Please note that not all features available in the final release can yet be found in the beta release.

The following features are available in the beta version of OXID eShop 4.9:

  • Email validation for all top level domains.
  • Configurable carrier tracking.
  • Optimization of security features such as enhanced password encryption and Captcha.
  • Enhanced SEO options.
  • Update of the database structure.

We hope you enjoy testing this beta version and are very much looking forward to hearing your feedback and would like to say a big THANKS to all those contributing on GitHub. Don’t hesitate to share any comments via our mailing list, our bug tracker or on GitHub. Many thanks in advance.

Please do not use the beta version as production system. Updating from this beta release to future versions will not be feasible.

OXID eShop Version 5.1/4.8 Beta Released

Ina El-KhadiWe are nearly finished with developing OXID eShop version 5.1 (Enterprise Edition) and version 4.8 (Professional and Community Edition) and would like to invite you to beta test the changes we have made.

You might have noticed during the last few months that we are about to consolidate the software kernel, clean it up where possible, create a more solid infrastructure and make it easier to develop your own extensions.

Here is what has been changed basically:

Widgets
Widgets have been introduced in OXID eShop version 4.7 and can be loaded everywhere you want in your website layout. They can load content regardless of whether a specific variable is available on this page or not. Now we added 33% more of them to enable a higher performance if using varnish and a more flexible development with widgets.

Diagnostics tool
In the service area of the admin panel we added a tool for diagnostics including the formerly known “oxchkversion”. This tool collects relevant information about the shop installation and the server and might be helpful before and after updating, for installing modules or trouble-shooting.

Streamlined language files
The files with the language keys have been significantly streamlined (at least for the front end) to reduce the number of the keys. So we removed duplicate entries, reduced the usage of language key mapping to zero (the functionality is still there) and introduced solutions for the efficient usage of suffixes such as colons and arguments. We will also provide a tool for scanning your template files for old language keys and turning them into the new ones.

SEPA
The classical direct debit will expire on February 1st, 2014 and will be replaced by the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) procedure. For this reason, bank accounts received an IBAN and a BIC code for international money transfer. From OXID eShop version 4.8/5.1 on, these codes will be validated in addition to the legacy bank account codes.

Additional messages in the fourth checkout step
In the fourth checkout step, we added two additional messages: The foreign purchaser will be pointed to the fact that an additional fee could be demanded by the customs service; for those who choose cash on delivery as a payment service the message will appear that the messenger might demand an extra fee.

If you’re interested in more details please turn to this page on OXIDforge wiki that will be supplemented step-by-step during the beta phase
http://wiki.oxidforge.org/Downloads/4.8.0_5.1.0

This beta release is a feature freeze: during the beta phase we will only work on possible bugs.

As always for a beta version: be careful with using it as it is not intended to be used in productive mode. Also, there will not be any update scripts to or from this beta version.

Please download OXID eShop version 4.8 beta from OXID eXchange. By clicking on “Download additional file” you’ll receive an SQL script for updating your existing database to this beta version in order to check your system including all product items, categories, settings etc.

Thanks in advance, we’re looking forward to your feedback!

Preview of OXID eShop’s New Downloadable Products Feature

OXID eShop 4.6.0 will come with a set of great new features, such as support for downloadable products. Using an early beta version, I produced a screencast about this new function and added it to the screencast section of OXIDforge. If you haven’t seen it yet, why not take a look now? Note that some things might have changed since the screencast was produced, so you might find some differences to the present beta version.

You may also want to have a look at the roadmap for version 4.6.0 or at the changes on the download page – it documents, step by step, the new functions we plan to introduce. And while you’re inspecting the beta version, please send us your feedback and any bugs that you might find.

By the way: the „downloadable products“ feature was originally contributed by marmalade.de, as I mentioned in an earlier blog post. If you have coded a feature that could fit into the standard OXID eShop software, please take a look at the contribution page on OXIDforge. This explains how a contribution can be made, whom to contact and what are the surrounding conditions. If you think your new feature would be an interesting and useful contribution to OXID eShop, feel free to contact us and tell us all about it – we would love to hear from you!
